I had a dream recently. India topping Olympic medals table beating Chinese, Australians and Americans. I felt ecstatic, only to find myself raising from deep slumber. It’s every Indian’s dream to see his/her country on the top of the world by winning maximum medals. Olympics is fantastic thought. A thought of bringing the world’s most talented sportsmen to display their skills and make their countries proud. Olympics is a forum, where any country can prove her prowess either by hosting it or by showcasing it’s sporting talent. Chinese are doing exactly the same in the ongoing Beijing Olympics. But, India?? Land of billion people. Topping the medal table from the bottom in last few editions!
Our leaders are more involved in vote politics, like the one recently happened. I think, they have moral responsibilities to improve the pathetic sports infrastructure, disassemble horrid bureaucracy & red-tapism that our athletes are facing for ages now. It’s not that we have no athletes to compete at world arena. We have potential world class athletes. I repeat, we have potential world class athletes. To convert this potential world class athletes to the world class athletes we need world class sports infrastructure, unprecedented changes in policies and its implementation from the Govt., from the people though their support, from the corporate world through sponsorships. And also we need to spread a wild-fire like desire in each and every Indian to show the world that his/her country that is no less in sports too. Like that one that transformed Australia and China. A spectacular transformation, that led to gobbling up of as many medals in future editions of the game by both countries. Why did not, we feel humiliation after seeing our position in medal tally after every Olympics. Did Cricket made us feel so numb to this fact? Or the overdose of one sport, which captured millions of hearts like anything, played enormous curse to other Indian sportsmen?
The argument like, funds for fulfilling this dream could be re-directed to poverty eradication and overall improvement of life standards of millions, should not eclipse our global dreams and aspirations. The growth of life standards is very important and needs gigantic amount of thoughts and actions, but at the same time, we need not compromise our sporting showcase to the world. We should show the world, the true colors of our hidden super power. And Olympics is just the right thing we need to grab.
I am no expert either in Indian sports or in Olympics. This is just piece of ink, by an ordinary citizen of India, written out of anguish of seeing his country’s Olympics performance every leap year and dreaming and also hoping for her raising in the future.
Update : What a coincidence. Hours after writing this post, Abhinav Bindra , scored a perfect Gold in 10 m Air rifle event @ Beijing Olympics. This is the India’s frst individual Gold medal at Olympics.

If my son shows promising talents, I will certainly support him fullest. That’s whole point. Our education system and our parental attitudes towards it dumps most of the talents.

It has to be developed in the format public-private partnership. What we indians always do is a blame game. Our politicans have grown us like that. See i have started blaming them. Its all in the blood of ours. Cant help it
But seriously your points are note worthy. But how will all the sport swill public interest?

Sami,
Blaming game can be cured! And the point, how to bring sporting interest in public. It’s easier comparing to bringing other interests in people. Sports, majority of us, like it. And if the patriotism involved in it, then everyone will give their part of support, irrespective of their size.
Look at India @ Olympics now (21 Aug).We already have two medals, and expecting one more. The whole country (majority of us) want Vijendra to go to finals in Middle weight boxing and win gold for us, for our country. When patriotism is running high, the unity in we Indians will be at peak.
Shrinidhi,
Thanks dude. I subscribed your feed long ago. I don’t maintain blog roll! Reciprocated !!
