Confused by reading this freakish book, I was just lucky to stumble upon a stripped version of the book, “The Science & Philosophy of Religion” by Swami Vivekananda, which I bought years ago and was lying dormant! Just it was pure chance, that I stumbled upon this book and it clarified & cleared many things that I was confused with reading the previous one. In fact, in the previous one, some of the text were lifted from Vivekananda’s book!!
“The Science & Philosophy of Religion” is a short (only 123 pages) and stripped version of some of the lectures of Swami Vivekanada’s on Hinduism & its philosophies. I don’t remember the reason, I chose the book, during my college days. Could be due to curious to know the relation of Science & Religion? Whatever it was, the book is a good read. But may be, only to those who want to know. I could easily appreciate, the Vivekananda’s way of explaining some of the most abstract things in simple manner, given my experience with the previous book.
The book starts with Samkya philosphy and its explanation about cosmos. Vivekananda heaped praises, on many instances, on the sage Kapila, who is founder of Samkya school of thought. The entire thing is complex and when I understood ‘em in small quantities, they made enormous sense. Perhaps our astronomers, astrophysicists should know about Samkya and Kapila.
The chapters ran till the end of the book touching on different aspects of Samkya philosophy and slowly noting the short comings of it in relatively simple language and ended on how developed much more advanced Vedanta.
You don’t become saint after reading this. But certainly appreciate the content, if you find it intersting. I always had this question in my mind. Is there anything alternative to science to enquire into nature? I kinda of thinking now, that we might find one, if we dig deeper into our own ancient India’s contributions.
