“Mavericks @ work”

April 17th, 2009 · No Comments · Books

When I first picked up this book in Landmark, Chennai, I am intrigued by the fact that its blurb says something interesting, but there are few number of praises or reviews on the book. In fact, I found only one praise on its cover page! I made a decision to buy. I read it. I should say the money spent on it not went down the drain.

The book talks about people, the way they think, work & devour their ideas and makes their companies different from the crowd and actually win the competition. There are many excellent examples on the companies & its people behind, quoted, explained the passion, ideas behind, disruptive practices and changing facets of the industries. The case studies ranges from extraordinary growth of Starbucks to a mining company in Canada, which used an open source model to find gold deposits in its mines to a construction company which actually video interview  its customers’ feedback to innovative practices brought into broadcasting market by HBO TV channel to ING Direct game changing banking operations in US to marvelous raise of Southwest Airlines to work cultures of Pixar Animation Studios and many more.

In each of these cases, I am deeply impressed by so many creative and intelligent people who want to make a change and make their companies as a leader in their hyper competition market place.  All these companies, indeed made big differences in their fields. And the important thing is people are responsible for the successes. People with amazing attitude towards their work, people with ambitious dreams, people with fantastic approaches towards implementation.

The book is divided into parts, in each section, some aspects like innovation, competition, work place culture et cectra, discussed. After quoting examples and words from the real people who made differences, the authors mention messages that are deduced from the examples.

I like this book, because it gave me a window to learn from good number of real stories, if not exhaustive list, that in order to succeed, you need to have a maverick attitude.

The book also has a well maintained website here.
