I find, people who show no remorse for their gross misdeeds, as those fall in sub-human category that yet to be discovered. When the same people gets supported and re-elected multiple times to the highest offices in the state, well, I should blame the people who voted him/her. It also could be, that we might be genetically programmed to display our unquestionable (blinded) followership to our leaders.
In my college days, I used to watch HardTalk program on BBC. Tim Sebastin, who was the host at that time, used to ask tough questions to those who are politicians, social activists, bureaucrats, writers and people from almost in all walks of life whose contributions are more than significant and made deep impact in public lives. The program’s Indian version HardTalk India, hosted by Karan Thapar, was also an interesting program to watch. Karan with his charisma & intellect used to pierce through personalities and milk never uttered words & real motives out of them. People still remember the famous Kapil Dev’s breakdown in one of his shows. I miss those shows now.
In one of the Tim Sebastin’s show, after Gujarat outrage in 2002, I still distinctly remember the remorseless person answering some of the bitterest questions. His answers were just surfacial, beat-around-bush type and never actually to the point. Any civilized person after seeing that episode, would surely make an opinion against those parasites in our country. I myself formed a strong opinion against that group’s atrocious activities done in the name of Hinduism.
We had/have too many crooks in power. All those crooks want is power. Power to mark a point. To mark a point to satisfy their own selfish desires. To mark a point, that they want to keep coming to power and whoever opposes it, crush him/her and set an example that no one dares to think against them.
The point I want to make here, is about the news organization Tehelka & its investor and their sufferings from the hands of the government in power. For having them exposed to bribery in its highest political ranks, Indian Government in 2001, made a point. It crushed not only Tehelka and but also its PE investor. Listen to the investor ordeal, that he went through, though he was not involved in any kind operations of Tehelka. You punish the people, who exposed your wrong side. The people who are in the wrong side go unpunished and given the power baton again. Wow! This is our 21st century India! Freedom of expression operates in specific realms.
I read Tehelka’s articles about Gujarat carnage here. Though the articles are not comprehensive in the online edition, I got the point. The so called leader used an spontaneous but not freak incident and made a killing out of it. The leader made sure that his followers got the clue of his intention, resulting in an unprecedented riots our country ever seen. The investigation done is a joke and also clearly shows the systematic abuse of power. When BBC went to interview the same leader, he displayed his great humbleness to ignore & dismiss the press. The surprising thing is he went on to win the subsequent elections for two terms. I don’t understand. How can people vote for a person who inspired an animal act?
These unconstitutional acts were performed and yet no responsible actions taken on the perpetrators. This prompting me to ask : are we a civilized nation? do we need leaders like him? do we need to give power to the leader who is directly or indirectly responsible of nearly two thousand innocent lost lives?
Our country, seriously lack true leaders. Even a single true leader can make enormous impact by giving hope to the ordinary folks & be as role model to many potential leaders of future. We desperately need a true leader!
